For the majority of my career, I have been involved in Special Educational Needs. As a Learning Support Teacher, I taught children with a range of Special Educational Needs (SEN) and in my role as a Special Educational Needs Co Ordinator (SENCo) for many years I planned strategically in school for children with SEN and I led special educational provision. As a Qualified Teacher of Children with Visual Impairment (QTVI) I worked with children and young people with visual impairments in a range of settings including preschool, primary, post primary and Special. While working for some years in the Education Authority I guided schools through their legislative duties in providing for children with SEN and I was involved in strategic SEN estate planning.
I am a parent to a now grown-up child with a visual impairment, and as a family we have benefitted greatly throughout the years from Angel Eyes NI. It is my privilege to be able to work as part of this multi-disciplinary dedicated team to support children with visual impairments and their families.
As Education Advocate for Angel Eyes NI, I support children, young people and families to fully understand and access education systems. I can draw upon my experiences within the education sector to offer support that families and schools may need to navigate aspects of education. My aim is for children and young people with visual impairment to fulfil their potential, develop their confidence and enjoy their educational journey.
